Donations/Bequests & Memorials

A donation is a unique and memorable gift. Whether it's for an anniversary, birthday, graduation or memorial, a donation to the Peterborough Public Library Foundation lets you give something special that will be cherished by many for years to come. Your donation is a gift that keeps on giving and one that will recognize the special person you have chosen to honour.

Endowment Funds
The Endowment Fund is comprised of gifts made through donors or estates to form a perpetual endowment fund. Interest earned from the Foundation Endowment Fund goes to support your Library.

Designated Funds

Donations directed to specific projects:

  • Collections – i.e. books, audio-visual materials, electronic information
  • Furniture and Equipment
  • Special Projects
  • Staff Development

Ways of Giving

  1. Cash Gifts
A donation of money is the easiest gift, and you as donor get immediate tax relief.

  2. Wills and Bequests
The donor’s estate may claim charitable donations in the year of death equal to 100% of net income - and excess can be carried back one year. Pledges made through Wills and Bequests are revocable - which means, yes, you can change your mind.

  3. Endowment
A donation of $10,000 or more will create, at your request, an endowment that keeps on giving to the Library. If you wish, you can continue to donate into this endowment for a period of up to five years.

  4. Stripped Bonds
This is a gift that grows over time. And, a charitable receipt is issued at the time the gift is made, or on the amount of money given to buy the bond.

  5. Gift of RRSP or RIFF
Making this easy on your executors, a registered fund can be simply designated as a gift through your will or by the recipients of the legacy. A charitable receipt is issued for the full amount. The fund does not have to be deregistered first.

  6. Gift Annuity
These gifts can be made by donors 60 years of age or older, and can be a joint donation with spouse or sibling. A one-time charitable receipt is issued. Importantly, a substantial portion of the income earned is non-taxable.

For all of these types of gifts, more information is available from our experts on how they work, and how they benefit both you and the Library.
