Newspapers
The Library subscribes to a small number of print newspapers such as the
Globe and Mail,
Lakefield Herald,
Lindsay Post,
National Post,
Northern Miner, the
Peterborough Examiner,
Peterborough This Week, and
Toronto Star. Back issues are retained for two months. Three of these are retained permanently on
microfilm – the
Peterborough Examiner,
Peterborough This Week and the
Globe and Mail.
Due to space constraints and preservation issues, the library has a limited collection of print newspapers, newsletters and other similar periodicals. Some of these are retained as part of the library’s Peterborough Collection. The Peterborough Collection contains items of a local nature that are pertinent to the needs of researchers of Peterborough, Peterborough County and surrounding areas. See the
Peterborough Collection page of this web site for more details.
The library retains a number of older newspapers on microfilm. Most of these are from Peterborough but the library does have a lengthy run of the Globe and Mail. For a complete list, check the section
Genealogy/Local History of this web site.
Many newspapers are now available electronically through the library’s web site and can be accessed from home with your library card. eLibrary Canada includes Canadian newspapers such as National Post, Calgary Herald, Edmonton Journal, Montreal Gazette, Ottawa Citizen, Hamilton Spectator, Toronto Star, Windsor Star, and more. Newsstand includes such papers as Peterborough This Week, Kawartha Lakes This Week from February 2008 to the present. Access to the electronic version of the Peterborough Examiner is available for use in the library. It covers news articles from January 2000 to the present and death notices from May 14, 2008 to the present.
